Podcasting Workshop Gives Hands-On Look at Careers in Media [23-24 Impact Report]

Experts from NPR and WABE give students hands-on lessons in media production

During November 2023, Georgia State University Library hosted “Listen Up! A Podcasting Gathering,” an interactive workshop that provided students with valuable insights from NPR and WABE media professionals. The event offered students hands-on training with industry-standard tools and equipment, guided tours of the library’s multimedia labs, and discussions on storytelling and podcast production.

“This event underscores our commitment to providing real-world experiences that prepare students for careers in media. Learning from reputable local media, using professional-grade tools, and gaining storytelling skills are invaluable opportunities that give students a competitive edge,” said Bryan Sinclair, the library’s associate dean for public services.

The event included a live podcast demonstration by WABE and NPR staff, highlighting podcasting basics and encouraging students to enter NPR’s College Podcast Challenge, which offers cash prizes to college students nationwide.

Throughout the day, students had the chance to engage in panel discussions, networking opportunities, and workshops, covering everything from conducting interviews to understanding story development. The gathering also featured local history podcaster Victoria Lemos, who shared her journey and favorite stories from her Archive Atlanta podcast, providing attendees with real-world insights into the art of storytelling through podcasting.

By offering access to experienced media professionals and university resources, this event positioned students for success in the growing podcasting field, blending career readiness with creative exploration. ▪
