ALA Diversity Research Grant Awarded to Pullen Librarians
La Loria Konata and Dr. Tim Zou recently were awarded a 2003/04 Diversity Research Grant from the American Library Association (ALA). The grant is awarded annually by the ALA Office of Diversity in three areas of scholarship in which an ALA jury determines research is needed.
Konata is reference and policy studies liaison librarian at Pullen Library; Zou heads the library’s Access and Media Services department. Together, the team will evaluate efforts to integrate minorities into meaningful supervisory and management roles by tracking career development paths of librarians of underrepresented racial and ethnic groups. The project was submitted under this year’s research topic: furthering diversity initiatives in a skeptical environment.
The grant consists of a $2,000 award for original research and a $500 award for travel to the ALA Annual Conference in 2004, where Konata and Zou will present their work.
Grants were also awarded this year to librarians representing the University of Wisconsin Milwaukee and the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.
