Women’s Studies Institute Events: “Middle Passages: Race, Space and Migration in the African Diaspora” and “Intersex 101”
The GSU Women’s Studies Institute announces two upcoming talks sponsored by Students Promoting Engagement and Activism through Knowledge, Faces of Feminism, and the GSU Women’s Studies Institute.
The first event will be Prof. Trystan Cotten, Associate Professor of Gender and Ethnic Studies at California State University Stanislaus, speaking on “Middle Passages: Race, Space, and Migration in the African Diaspora.” This talk will take place on Tuesday, April 3, 12 p.m. to 1 p.m., in the Troy Moore Library, General Classroom Building, 9th Floor.
Prof. Cotten is the editor of Transgender Migrations: The Bodies, Borders, and Politics of Transition (2012), Stories of Oprah: The Oprahfication of American Culture (2010), and editor of the forthcoming collection Hung Jury: Testimonies of Genital Surgery by Transsexual Men (forthcoming June 2012). Prof. Cotten is founder and CEO of Transgress Press, a new social entrepreneurial model of publishing that promotes transgressive thinking.
The second event will be Caitlin Petrakis Childs, Atlanta-based intersex activist and organizer, speaking on “Intersex 101,” which will provide an overview of what intersex is, share her personal story, and offer ways to get involved in supporting the intersex movement. Ajae Clearway’s short documentary film One in 2000 will also be shown. Childs’ website is available here.
