Spotlight on Spaces: New Gaming & VR Lab Opens Doors to Hands-On Learning
The Gaming & VR Lab, located on the 2nd floor of Library North (room N275), opened in mid-September 2024, offers a central space on campus for students to explore and study video games, virtual reality, and game development. This lab was born out of a collaboration with the College of the Arts (COTA) and is a direct response to students’ need for accessible gaming systems to support their coursework.
“A professor in The School of Film, Media & Theatre described the difficulty students were having with accessing all the games and gaming systems they needed to be able to study for their classes,” says Nedda Ahmed, College of the Arts Librarian. “There are other gaming labs/rooms on campus, but none are accessible to all students, regardless of major/department. So, in the spring of 2023, we proposed building a gaming lab here in the Library during GSU’s Instructional Innovation & Technology’s (IIT) annual Innovation Fund selection process.”
Key Features and Benefits: The Gaming & VR Lab supports students across multiple disciplines at Georgia State, reinforcing the library’s position as the campus hub for productivity and creativity. Students can freely access the space and learn how different gaming platforms work. It also includes access to a catalogue of historical video games, giving students the chance to explore the evolution of gaming.
The lab provides a variety of gaming consoles and virtual reality headsets, including:
- PlayStation 5
- Alienware PC
- LG OLED TV
- HDMI connections for user convenience
- Acoustic wall panels that reduce reflections and echoes, enhancing the sound quality of gameplay and VR experiences
- NES Classic and Super NES Classic consoles
- Sony PlayStation VR2 headset kit
- HTC Vive VR headset kit
- Nintendo Switch with Switch Pro controllers
- A selection of PlayStation and Nintendo games
This equipment makes the lab an ideal place for getting assignments done and gaming for fun.
