Responding to Multilingual Writers– Dr. Diane Belcher–12pm Monday October 29th– Troy Moore Library, 9th floor General Classroom Building
Should multilingual writers receive the feedback they want or the feedback they need? Or, is this a false dichotomy? Are tutors (and teachers) or the writers themselves better able to assess multilingual writers’ needs? And after determining which needs to address, are there optimal ways of addressing them, ways that may not be in synch with some long-held, well-reasoned philosophies of responding? Dr. Belcher will discuss these and other issues regarding multilingual writers without overgeneralizing who they are and what might best help them achieve their goals. Some library resources on this topic include: Multilingualism: understanding linguistic diversity; Cross-linguistic influences in multilingual language acquisition; and Language mixing and code-switching in writing: approaches to mixed-language written discourse.
Diane D. Belcher received her PhD in English from Ohio State University. Before coming to Georgia State in 2003, she was Director of the ESL Composition Program and Adjunct Associate Professor of Foreign/Second Language Education at Ohio State. She has also taught as a Foreign Expert at the Beijing Normal College of Foreign Languages.
