Study Commons receives 2024 Library Interior Design Award [23-24 Impact Report]

The Georgia State University Library’s Study Commons received a 2024 Library Interior Design Award from the International Interior Design Association (IIDA) and the American Library Association (ALA). This biennial award recognized the library’s exceptional interior design, highlighting innovative concepts that enhance library spaces.

The Library North Study Commons is a 19,000 square-foot area crafted to meet the varied needs of Georgia State’s students, faculty, and staff. PRAXIS3 Architecture + Multidisciplinary Design led the project, transforming a former street-level parking lot into a modern and flexible environment that greatly enhanced the library’s capacity to offer essential services and resources.

Dean of Libraries Jeff Steely expressed his pride in the achievement, noting “with the Study Commons, we created a safe and welcoming environment that better supports our academic community. We are thrilled to be recognized.”

Cheryl S. Durst, Hon. FIIDA, IIDA Executive Vice President and CEO, celebrated the unique role of library design in promoting community, education, and inspiration, acknowledging that “these winning designs set a precedent for future public and academic spaces, emphasizing environments that unite knowledge, empowerment, and human connection.”

The Study Commons was honored in the Academic Libraries—30,000 Square Feet and Under category, one of only eleven projects selected for the award. The library’s achievement was celebrated on July 29 during the ALA Annual Conference and Exhibition in San Diego. ▪
