Creating Student-centered Library Experiences [23-24 Impact Report]
Creating Student-centered Library Experiences through Orientation and Advocacy
The University Library plays a vital role in student success, from helping new students navigate their academic journey during orientation to empowering student leaders to shape the library’s future through the Student Library Advisory Council (SLAC). By engaging with students at every stage of their college experience, the library ensures that its resources, spaces, and services meet the evolving needs of Georgia State’s diverse community. These efforts not only create a sense of belonging but also give students a voice in how the library supports their academic and personal growth.
Library Presents at Orientation Leaders’ Training to Update Leaders on Key Resources and Services
Dean Jeff Steely, and Communications Director, Roy Cummings, presented at the Orientation Leaders’ training in May 2024 to emphasize the library’s role in supporting student success. Orientation leaders, as the first points of contact for incoming students, learned about the library’s extensive spaces, services, and tools designed to meet a wide range of academic needs. By equipping leaders with this knowledge, the library ensures that every new student starts their academic journey with access to essential resources.
“Orientation leaders are essential in making sure incoming GSU students know about library spaces and resources available to help them succeed,” said Cummings. “By partnering with these leaders, we ensure that every new student knows the library is not just a place to get the occasional book, but one of the most important places on campus to find academic and community support.”
Topics covered in the orientation training include:
- The six campus library locations, available to all GSU students.
- Innovative spaces like VR and gaming rooms, videoconferencing studios, mindfulness rooms, and group study areas.
- Essential services such as research consultations, workshops, and technology checkouts for academic and creative projects.
- Access to online databases, interlibrary loans, and unique materials in Special Collections & Archives.
Orientation leaders training is an initiative of the Office of Student Orientation and Family Engagement (SOFE) and aims to equip student leaders with the knowledge and skills needed to support incoming students as they transition to campus life and navigate university resources. This collaboration reflects the library’s commitment to empowering students with the tools, spaces, and support they need from day one at Georgia State University. ▪
Student Library Advisory Council Gives Insight Into Student Wants and Needs
The Student Library Advisory Council (SLAC) convened in Spring 2024 to provide valuable student perspectives on improving library resources and services. SLAC members contribute to shaping the future of the library by offering insights and ideas that ensure its initiatives align with student needs. This collaborative forum also offers participants professional development opportunities, networking with university leaders, and a platform to impact the campus community. Open to undergraduate and graduate students, SLAC is an example of the library’s commitment to student engagement and responsive service. ▪
