The publisher notes that the book presents “a compelling portrait of the controversial admiral widely regarded as the founder of the modern Navy, implementing major strategic innovations that endure to this day, especially in his campaign against racism and sexism throughout the fleet-a portrait of leadership that is essential for our time.”
You can read more about this new book online, or check out some of Dr. Berman’s other publications in the GSU Library.
I served in the U.S. Navy from 1958 to 1979. I was promoted to CPO in Oct ’67. I just accepted the Navy as it was.
When the Admiral became CNO and the Fleet began getting Z-grams, the world changed – For. The. Better.
As a Chief, I had so much more independence, more freedom. I’ll never know if the command was pissed-off by the CNO’s directives, decided to ignore them or what, but that command and the subsequent one gave me the freedom to treat my division/department like human beings and not a herd to boss around.
Very Respectfully,
George Parker
