Celebrating The Great Speckled Bird!

The online version of The Great Speckled Bird, Atlanta’s underground newspaper from the 1960s and 1970s, will officially launch this Thursday!  Helping us celebrate, Dr. John McMillian, GSU History professor and author of  Smoking Typewriters: The Sixties Underground Press and the Rise of Alternative Media in America, will speak about how the underground press is a window for students and scholars to these turbulent decades.

And on display will be the Library’s new traveling exhibit about The Bird.  Thanks to a grant from The Georgia Humanities Council, the Library has created a 4-panel exhibit introducing major themes and events in the publication history of this new voice from the South.
