Georgia State University Library

Reception for Eudora Welty Collection Donation

On the evening of April 13, 2004, the Special Collections department and Georgia State University’s English Department co-hosted a reception in honor of the donation of John S. Bayne’s “Eudora Welty Collection.” The Rare Book Collection of Special Collections is now the new home of a wonderfully unique collection of Eudora Welty materials.

Amongst the jewels of the collection are first, signed, foreign and limited edition novels, short stories, and photograph books; publications containing Welty’s earliest works; and scarce association items. Pearl McHaney, editor of the Eudora Welty Newsletter, introduced the collection and its creator, John S. Bayne, as well as the many people responsible for the successful event. Other notable speakers included the President of Georgia State University (and collector of children’s books), Carl Patton; the director of the University Library, Charlene Hurt; the Kenneth England Professor of Southern Literature, Thomas McHaney; and exhibit creator and Rare Book curator Laurel Bowen. Readings from Welty’s works were done by Pearl McHaney and Colleen O’Hare. For pictures of the event, click here.

Copies of the illustrated collection catalogue are available in Special Collections.
