Clarkston Campus Library Hosts Future College Students

Early spring 2025, approximately 150 fifth graders from Indian Creek Elementary School participated in the GSU Perimeter College’s experience Cradle to College program. The immersive program creates educational experiences like field trips and guest speaker sessions for elementary and middle school students, inspiring them to consider college as a future goal. These activities are designed based on research, showing that early exposure to higher education enhances academic success and contributes to the growth of our kindergarten through 12th-grade communities.

Clarkton Library staff gave students a glimpse into academic life at a library. Students attended an engaging library talk, explored a Black History Month exhibit, participated in a library-themed word game, and had the chance to inquire about the library and its staff. As a result, the library staff was invited to participate in Career Day.

“Outreach is one of our primary goals, and it is critical to supporting the mission of our institution. These youth are our future, and we are delighted to collaborate with the Cradle to College Program to expose them to higher educational pursuits in a meaningful and fun way,” said Angiah Davis, Department Head for Clarkston Library and Perimeter Library Online.

“It truly takes a village to create and execute an inclusive learning environment, and today, I believe we have achieved our goal,” said Davis.

In addition to visiting the library, students explored a STEM lab, engaged in mini lectures from various academic departments, and enjoyed lunch.

“They were so enthusiastic about college by the time they were done…showing these kids that Perimeter College is a place where they will belong is what it’s all about,” said Dr. Deborah Manson, Professor of English and Faculty Associate for Strategic Initiatives.

The Cradle to College Program began in 2018. Since then, hundreds of elementary and middle school students have participated in the program.
