The Center for Latin American and Latino/a Studies invites you to attend a lecture by Orlando Luis Pardo Lazo, a Cuban free-lance writer, photographer, and dissident blogger. In 2009, he was involved in an incident and allegedly harassed by Cuban security agents, along with another renowned Cuban dissident blogger, Yoani Sánchez. In 2010, Lazo founded the independent opinion and literary e-zine Voces, Cuba’s first digital magazine. On September 1, 2012, Havana police arrested Lazo along with several others. News of his arrest spread quickly through social media, particularly Twitter, and a group formed outside of the jail to protest his arrest. He was released later that same night.
