Season’s Reading/Season’s Viewing
Do you want something entertaining after you finish with exams? The library has books and DVDs to help you relax after you finish your finals.
Dr. Who: A Christmas Carol
This Dr. Who holiday special, starring Matt Smith as the Doctor, is a fun take on Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol. It includes flying sharks, amazing music, and guest performances by Michael Gambon (of Harry Potter fame) and Welsh singer Katherine Jenkins. It is a Dr. Who tradition to include a Christmas special each year. The library also has video recordings of the Dr. Who specials The Snowmen and The Doctor, the Widow, and the Wardrobe.
Little Women
This 1994 film of the classic book Little Women, by Louisa May Alcott, was nominated for several awards. It stars Susan Sarandon, Wynona Ryder, and Gabriel Byrne, and was filmed at the home of the Alcotts in Massachusetts. It’s an entertaining drama that begins right before Christmas with the four March sisters struggling with “a temporary poverty,” since their father is away from home serving as a chaplain in the Union Army during the Civil War. The score by Thomas Newman won the 1995 BMI Film Music Award.
White Christmas
Dreaming of snow, but frustrated with Georgia’s lack of the white stuff? Check out Irving Berlin’s White Christmas, starring Bing Crosby and Danny Kaye. The comedic chemistry and timing of Kaye and Crosby is hilarious. An example of this is the alternative version of the “Sisters” number by Crosby and Kaye. The film is one of the best for singing, dancing, and classic comedy.
